Description

PAPER/WORK was a whimsical take on the mismatch between the reality of scientific research and the public understanding of it. Blake Gardens, a UC Berkeley-owned, research-oriented botanical garden was only open to the public for one weekend day per year. On such an occasion, in 2018, I was invited to create a ritualized performance in the space. For as long as the site was open to the public, I asked visitors to help delicately gather leafy detritus from each of the garden’s many distinct biomes which I then brusquely assembled into biome-specific sheets of paper with only an industrial stapler, as documents of living systems.
